Windows 7 computer shuts down overnight
When the user starts the machine the next morning they get the screen 'Windows did not shut down properly, start normal, safe, blah blah There are no events in the BIOS about the shutdown either.
There are different power settings based on the users' preferences. Some have sleep mode enabled, others do not. I'm wondering if I just had a bad image or if it's a problem with all machines. Any suggestions? Disable sleep, hibernate, turn off monitor, and turn of hard disk.
Also make sure they are plugged in ;. I would check the BIOS for power saving features. Sounds like the BIOS is detecting the machine's idle, and shutting down. I suspect they will walk you through it, or remote in and figure out what's causing it. I doubt you'll need an RMA, but requesting one will get them interested in your case. Can you let one of these sit in a BIOS screen overnight to see if it shuts down?
It would at least let you know something in Windows is going whacky. Applying updates to system bios, and windows, usually will take care of it. My plan B was to contact Dell but wanted to try and figure it out myself first.
Air Jimi The machine doesn't blue screen. For example, I have it set to Balanced, and on battery turn off display after 15 minutes, and sleep after 2 hours I always run on battery so don't want it sleeping non stop , and plugged in 30 minutes to turn off display, and never shut down.
Under advanced, hybrid sleep is turned off, as is hibernate. The problem is I'll close the lid, come back an hour later and it works no problem. However if I come back say 3 hours later, or in the morning, I open the lid and it's completely turned off.
I have to press power, and wait for it to fully boot up, however it's not even in a hibernate type state, it's full on shut down. So any word documents, excel, etc I had open are all completely lost and closed if I didn't remember to save them before shutting down. Windows 8 didn't do this and I can't see anything in the settings that would even indicate this. It sounds like hibernate but I'm pretty sure hibernate is supposed to actually save everything you were working on and not shut down all your applications.
Is there anything else I can check? It can't be a bios setting as again Windows 8 never had this issue, it's just since upgrading to 10 it seems to have its own way of handling power. Just to add to this, I closed the lid on my laptop literally 20 minutes ago, just came back, open it, computer is fully shut down.
Pressing power it boots up, everything closed. It seems to be turning off when left alone for long periods. Twice when I woke up in the morning and twice when I got home from work, the PC was turned off. When I turn it on it seems to boot perfectly I have not seen any errors and everything else seems to be working great. Does anyone have any ideas? May 16, 6, 24 27, Check your power options. Your system is likely going to sleep, not turning off. By default, computers are set to go to sleep after i believe 30 minutes.
I see what you mean about the sleep mode. It is set for 30 minutes. I'm going to have to keep an eye on this. Maye it's a different setting. Maybe my mouse is just not waking it up? Is this new? Something is different here from Win XP 32bit to Win 7 64bit I never needed to mess with the Power settings before, so this is new for me Thanks for the tip. Not a problem.
Turn the setting off and see if it does it again overnight. You must log in or register to reply here. Windows 7 5 Nov 7, Question Pc Monitor shows vertical lines then shuts down immediately!!!
